Some things to expect your child’s first week

Child-led play and activities

  • Creative and sensory play: Children will engage in activities like building with sticks, making mud pies, creating leaf crowns, and exploring natural materials.

  • Movement and exploration: Expect plenty of climbing, balancing on logs, and running. Some programs include activities like building obstacle courses or creating nature-themed obstacle courses

  • Nature-based projects: Activities can include painting on leaves, collecting and counting nature items, or building fairy houses.

What to expect for your child

  • Tiredness: After a day of fresh air and active play, your child will likely come home exhausted.

  • A different way of interacting: The experience can lead to new ways of playing, learning, and interacting with peers and the environment.

Program structure

  • Opening and closing circles: Many programs begin and end the day with a group circle for singing, sharing, and reflection.

  • Free-play and exploration: A significant portion of the day is dedicated to child-led play, allowing children to choose their own activities.

  • Gentle structure: While child-led, the day has a predictable structure, which can help children feel secure as they navigate new experiences.

Social and emotional development

  • Building confidence and resilience: The environment is designed to help children build confidence by taking on new challenges, such as climbing or problem-solving.

  • Developing communication: Children will learn to express themselves and work with others during group games, snack times, and circle time, with teachers facilitating conversation and check-ins.

  • Emotional intelligence: Teachers support children in developing emotional intelligence and navigating new feelings that may arise during the transition.
